How Do I Change The Section Number In Word?

Delight Note: This article is written for users of the post-obit Microsoft Word versions: 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, and Discussion in Office 365. If you are using an earlier version (Word 2003 or earlier), this tip may not work for y'all. For a version of this tip written specifically for earlier versions of Word, click here: Changing Sections.

Changing Sections

Discussion allows you to carve up a document into different layout areas called sections. Each department can exist set up then that it starts on a new page, odd page, even page, or is continuous. (Display the Layout tab of the ribbon and then click the Insert Page and Department Breaks tool to meet what types of section breaks are available.)

When y'all offset start using sections, they might seem a flake confusing. For instance, you may take a document in which you take multiple sections, some formatted as Continuous breaks and other as New Page breaks. If y'all later delete some of your section breaks, it may seem that the section formatting is getting messed upward. This is particularly true if yous delete the concluding section break you find in a document.

Why this is happening is best explained by an example. Let's say you take a document in which there are 3 sections:

  • Section 1 is formatted equally New Page
  • Section 2 is formatted every bit Continuous
  • Department 3 is formatted as New Folio

Yous must recollect that the formatting for each section is maintained in the section breaks at the stop of each section. This might seem odd, since you tin merely see two section breaks in the certificate, fifty-fifty though in that location are three sections. In the example document, the following is true:

  • The formatting for Section 1 (New Folio) is in the first department intermission.
  • The formatting for Section 2 (Continuous) is in the second section interruption.
  • The formatting for Section iii (New Page) is in the implied department suspension that is always at the end of a document.

Note that in that location is an implied section pause at the end of the certificate. This section suspension is non visible, of course, but information technology is nonetheless there, and contains formatting for the concluding section.

When you position your insertion bespeak but before the 2nd section intermission and printing the Delete cardinal, the section break is deleted. This deletes the section formatting for the second section, and the text in that section automatically is formatted according to what was in the third department. Thus, you terminate upwardly with two sections, as follows:

  • Sometime Section 1 (New Folio)
  • New Section ii (old Department 3, still New Folio)

It is easy to call up that Discussion changed your Continuous department to a New Page section, only in reality, Word did exactly what you told it to do: delete the 2d section. In that location really is no mode to delete the last department (the implied section that is e'er there) in a certificate. Instead, you must change the formatting of that section so it reflects what you desire.
